What is the mid-market rate?

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the prices at which banks buy and sell a currency. It is the fairest reference, but you will rarely get it: banks, exchange houses and transfer apps add a margin and sometimes a fixed fee. Compare the rate you are offered with this one to see how much the margin costs you.

Pegged Gulf currencies

The Saudi riyal (3.75 per dollar), UAE dirham (3.6725), Qatari riyal (3.64), Omani rial (0.3845) and Bahraini dinar (0.376) are pegged to the US dollar, so their rates against each other hardly move. The Kuwaiti dinar follows a basket of currencies. What moves is the rate against your home currency.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the rate at the exchange house different?

They sell at a rate below the mid-market rate and keep the difference. That margin is often 0.5% to 2%, sometimes more for less common currencies.

How often are rates updated?

The rates are refreshed once a day. The time of the last update is shown under the result.

Does it work offline?

It needs the internet the first time; the last rates are kept on your device for a while.
